Brendan Retirement post
Brendan
It is with mixed emotions of delight and a touch of sadness that we announce the retirement of Brendan McGuire. Brendan has been a true leader at Laurel Group for over 25 years with his unwavering commitment and exceptional service, which has been instrumental to our success.

· When Brendan was asked how many properties he has worked on since the beginning of his career, he replied, approximately 3000. Out of all those properties, his favorite was in Old Brookville. In early 2003 – 2005 he worked on and built one of his most treasured masterpieces…...13 acres of perfection for the founder of Bed Bath and Beyond. He has also worked on the properties belonging to Mark Gastineau of the NY Jets, a former professional baseball player for the Milwaukee Brewers, Robin Yount, and Fred Wilpon owner of the NY Mets. About 10 years ago, Brendan met Brooke Shields who happened to be visiting one of his clients.

· Brendan enjoys gardening, bird-watching, bike riding, hiking in Vermont and the Grand Canyon, and kayaking. He once went on a 9-day white water rafting adventure down the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon.

When asked what he was most proud of working at Laurel Group… he responded, “that I was able to produce Quality work with Quality people.”

Brendan’s meticulous attention to detail, combined with his ability to see the bigger picture, has been invaluable. His willingness to go the extra mile to meet deadlines consistently demonstrated his dedication to excellence.
Once Brendan retires, he plans to travel across the U.S. He plans on doing this over the course of many trips over many years. Out to the Midwest first, then the South, then the Northwest.

Thank you, Brendan, we all wish you the very best in all your retirement adventures! You have left an indelible mark on our company, our people, and the North Shore. You have been a great friend to us all and will surely be missed.

Justin has been with the Laurel Group since 2005 (Yes! That’s almost 20 years!). With his 2 years of experience as a drafter/designer at Gary Duff Designs, he joined us as an entry level designer. Since that time Justin has taken on more complex projects and has moved up to his current position of Lead Designer/Team Lead where he gets to keep designing but also supervises a design team and trains new designers. When asked what his favorite thing is about working at Laurel Group, Justin replied, “The people I work with are incredible. They are a fun group of talented and creative individuals. The projects we work on are also a big plus as they allow me to visit amazing properties that I then design to create the homeowners’ dream landscape.” Outside of work Justin enjoys spending time with his family and taking his two sons to their various sporting practices and games. As for the future? Justin sees himself continuing his work with Laurel Group and one day in the distant future, sitting on the beach enjoying the sun, sand, and sound of the waves with a cold beer in his hand.

New furniture and a Vibe Board finished it off creating an ideal collaborative workspace for our outstanding design team. Laurel employees’ product knowledge is impressive due to training like the one the design team attended in February at the Renson New York City studios. Designers spent two days learning about the Renson pergolas, their features, and accessories and have since applied this expertise when speaking with customers about the options available to them. Devin feels, “The ongoing education provided by The Laurel Group has been invaluable, furthering my knowledge of the field which benefits not only me, but our clients as well.”

Promotion 2022
Congratulations to Joe on his promotion to Design/Sales! Joe is another success story from our internship program. He interned with us the summer of 2016 before entering his senior year at the University of Rhode Island. The Laurel Group happily welcomed him back as a designer when he graduated in 2017 with his Bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture. After a lot of hard work and a few raises, Joe was promoted in 2022 to Design/Sales as he had the desire to sell his own designs. When asked why he wanted to work for The Laurel Group, Joe states, “I chose TLG because of its impeccable reputation and it was near home. I also enjoyed the internship process and decided I'd like to get into high end residential design/build.”

BLOOMBERG NEWS / CRAINS NEW YORK – POOL CRAZE/DELAYS
While the changes in leaf blower regulations have been a recent topic of discussion, so has the impact of supply chain, labor, and building permit issues. This was brought to light in the Bloomberg article dated 5/18/22 which indicated that these issues are even affecting those in the Hamptons. Families started the process of purchasing and installing pools in Spring 2022 for hopeful completion in Spring 2023. Mark was quoted saying, “What used to take four weeks [to get approved] now takes 90 days. If we submit something in January, and [those in the town building department] still haven’t read it in April. I can’t say for sure you’ll be swimming next summer.”

INTERN TO EMPLOYEE 2022
Congratulations to Alex on graduating from Penn State with a Bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture! Alex is another example of our internship program’s success. He joined us as an intern in the summer of 2021 where he gained hands on experience including drafting, site visits, plant selection, and the process of making a vision into reality. Alex’s skill and eagerness to learn earned him a job offer upon graduation. He happily accepted indicating, “The internship program proved to me that this is the field for me. I compared notes with other students and interviewed with other companies, but the Laurel Group was the one that stuck out for me. Their focus on collaboration, training, hard work, and the overall friendly environment made The Laurel Group an easy choice for my career.”

Hi guys!

I just wanted to take a minute to send out my favorite kind of note.

Yesterday the grounds crew was here to do the leaf cleanup. They did their usual excellent job, but that’s not why I’m writing. We left while they were here and left the garage door open — I know there were leaves and dust in there when we left, which had nothing to do with your guys. When we came back, the garage was spotless; blown out and looking better than it has in months (a lot of our contractors used it as a workshop so there was sawdust and metal shavings etc). Moreover, none of it was in the driveway, so they must have scooped it all up with the leaves. It was such a nice surprise, and so appreciated.

It’s those kinds of little above-and-beyond touches that make it so great working with you guys.

I thought it might be nice to get a note saying what a great job you’re doing and how happy we are as clients.

All the best,

~ Schwarz Family

The Laurel Group’s reputation as experts in the field have led to being highlighted in several noteworthy news outlets including CBS2s news. Reporter Carolyn Gusoff reached out to Mark for her 11/10/21 story regarding gas powered leaf blower restrictions. Mark indicated that he is not against the change, but it comes with a cost. "It costs us more in labor, because it's not as productive, it's not as powerful. And in addition, the machinery costs more, the battery life is inadequate," he said. Our hard-working crews were also included in the televised story demonstrating the differences in the blowers. To read the full article please click here.
